Two quotes for a new combi can differ by more than a thousand pounds and still both be fair. One may keep the boiler in the same cupboard and reuse the flue route; the other may move it to the loft, add a magnetic filter, power flush the radiators and remove a hot water cylinder. Before you compare totals, it helps to know which of those jobs each engineer is actually pricing.

What happens after you send an enquiry?
Start with your postcode, the fuel your boiler uses and what you want done. For a replacement, the approximate age of the current boiler and whether you have a hot water cylinder are the two details engineers ask about most. Suitable businesses may then contact you to book a survey, ask for photographs of the boiler and flue, or confirm the number of bathrooms in the house.

Photographs that save a wasted visit
A clear picture of the boiler with its front panel on, the data badge or model name, and the point where the flue leaves the building tells an engineer a great deal before they arrive. For an oil system, add a photo of the tank and its base. For a solid fuel boiler or back boiler, include the fireplace and the top of the chimney if you can see it safely from the ground.
Do not remove the boiler casing or open sealed panels to take photographs. Inside a gas or oil boiler there are combustion chambers, live electrics and hot surfaces that only a registered engineer should expose.
Comparing quotes for a new boiler
Check the boiler make and exact model, its output in kilowatts, the length of the manufacturer's warranty and whether that warranty depends on annual servicing by a registered engineer. Look for the flue type, the controls being fitted, whether a magnetic filter and inhibitor are included, and whether the system will be chemically cleaned or power flushed first. A quote without a model name is hard to compare with one that names it.

Registration matters more for boilers than almost any other home job
By law, anyone working on a gas appliance in a home must be on the Gas Safe Register and qualified for that specific type of work. Oil boiler installers are usually registered with OFTEC, and solid fuel and wood-burning appliance installers with HETAS. Self-certification depends on the installer's scheme, the work and the country. England and Wales have competent person routes; Scotland and Northern Ireland have separate procedures. Ask which approval and paperwork apply at your address.
Companies joining the network are asked to provide relevant insurance details and references. Before booking, ask for current evidence of registration and insurance, and check the registration number on the scheme's own website. An introduction does not guarantee the work.
